El despertar de Lucy Westenra

 

–Despierta, despierta –susurró la voz.
La joven abrió los ojos. Estaba muy oscuro. Por un instante no supo dónde se encontraba. No en su cama. Eso, seguro.
–Despierta –repitió la voz.
Se dio cuenta de que se hallaba tendida en una especie de caja. Las paredes estaban acolchadas. ¿Qué hacía allí? Lucy sólo recordaba que estaba enferma. Lo había estado durante mucho tiempo. Su madre había llamado a varios médicos, que no habían coincidido en el diagnóstico. Le recetaron medicinas de sabor desagradable que no habían conseguido aliviarle.
–Levántate –dijo la voz.
Lucy levantó los brazos y movió una especie de tapa. Salió. Se sorprendió al reconocer el panteón familiar. ¿Qué hacía allí? Leyó en una inscripción su nombre, Lucy Westenra. ¡Inconcebible! La única explicación que encontró la joven fue que ese excéntrico doctor holandés –Van Helsen o Van Helsing– la estaba sometiendo a un tratamiento insólito.
–Sal… Aliméntate –le ordenó la voz.
Sí, buena idea. Lucy notó que estaba hambrienta, sedienta. La joven salió del panteón. Era de noche. Caminó durante un rato sin rumbo. En la lejanía, escuchó llorar a un niño.

Las diez mil estatuas del faraón

Desde el delta hasta la lejana Nubia, el país está lleno de estatuas. Hay una en cada región, en cada ciudad, en cada aldea. Al faraón la gusta mirarlas porque ve al joven que ya no es, al monarca recién coronado que perseguía la prosperidad de Egipto. Las estatuas proclaman éxitos espurios contra los libios, contra los cananeos, contra los feroces hititas. Las estatuas permitirán que su memoria no desaparezca jamás; le harán inmortal. El faraón confía en que, dentro de cien generaciones, será recordado como el monarca justo y benévolo que nunca fue.
