Uniforme de mujeres en el ejercicio de la política

No tenemos ningún modelo del aspecto que ofrece una mujer poderosa, salvo que se parece más bien a un hombre. La convención del traje pantalón, o como mínimo de los pantalones, que visten tantas líderes políticas, desde Angela Merkel hasta Hillary Clinton, puede ser cómoda y práctica. Esta forma de vestir puede que sea indicativa del rechazo a convertirse en un maniquí, destino de muchas de las esposas de los políticos, pero también puede que sea una táctica —‌como la de bajar el timbre de la voz— para que las mujeres parezcan más viriles y así puedan encajar mejor en el papel del poder.

Toba

La última erupción de un supervolcán en la Tierra se produjo en Toba, en el norte de Sumatra, hace 74.000 años. Nadie sabe exactamente lo grande que fue, pero desde luego fue tremenda. Los testigos de hielo de Groenlandia muestran que a la explosión de Toba siguieron como mínimo seis años de "invierno volcánico" y Dios sabe cuántas estaciones de escaso crecimiento después de eso. El acontecimiento se cree que pudo llevar a los seres humanos hasta el borde de la extinción, reduciendo la población global a sólo unos cuantos millares de individuos. Eso significaría que todos los seres humanos modernos surgieron de una base de población muy pequeña, lo que explicaría nuestra carencia de diversidad genética. En todo caso, hay ciertas pruebas que sugieren que, durante los 20.000 años siguientes, el número total de habitantes de la Tierra no llegó a ser nunca superior a unos cuantos miles. No hace falta decir que es mucho tiempo para dedicarlo a recuperarse de una sola erupción volcánica.
